Frequently Asked Questions
What is a travel CPAP machine?
A travel CPAP machine is a compact, lightweight CPAP device designed for people who want to continue their sleep apnea therapy while travelling. Also known as a portable CPAP machine or mini CPAP machine, these devices are significantly smaller than standard home CPAP machines while still delivering effective therapy. They're ideal for vacations, business trips, camping (with a compatible battery), and anyone looking to save space when travelling.
What is the best travel CPAP machine?
The best travel CPAP machine depends on your individual needs and preferences.
- ResMed AirMini AutoSet – A great choice for frequent travellers looking for one of the smallest CPAP machines available. It features AutoSet technology, Bluetooth connectivity, and ResMed's waterless HumidX™ humidification system.
- Yuwell BreathCare Pocket S – Ideal for users who want to continue using any standard CPAP mask without the need for special adapters. It supports both CPAP and APAP modes and connects to the My Pocket app for easy setup and therapy tracking.
- Transcend Micro Auto – An ultra-lightweight portable CPAP machine that's compatible with all standard CPAP masks, offers waterless humidification with an HME, and has an optional battery available for travel and camping.
At CPAP Outlet, we carry a selection of travel CPAP machines to suit different travel styles and therapy needs.
What's the difference between a travel CPAP machine and a regular CPAP machine?
Travel CPAP machines provide the same effective sleep apnea therapy as standard home CPAP machines but are designed with portability in mind. They are smaller, lighter, and easier to pack for travel. Because of
their compact size, travel CPAP machines generally produce slightly more operating noise and may use waterless humidification instead of a traditional heated water chamber. Standard home CPAP machines remain the best option for everyday bedside use, while travel CPAP machines are designed to make therapy more convenient when you're away from home.
Do I need a prescription to buy a travel CPAP machine in Canada?
Yes. In Canada, a valid prescription is required to purchase any CPAP machine, including travel CPAP machines. Before your machine is shipped, it is configured according to your prescribed therapy settings. At CPAP Outlet, all CPAP machines are programmed to match your prescription before they are shipped.
Can I take a travel CPAP machine on an airplane?
Yes. Travel CPAP machines are designed with travel in mind and can generally be taken on an airplane. Models such as the ResMed AirMini and Transcend Micro are FAA-compliant for in-flight use. Most travel
CPAP machines also feature a universal power supply (100–240V), making them suitable for international travel with the appropriate plug adapter. If you plan to use your machine during a flight, we recommend checking with your airline in advance regarding onboard power availability and any battery requirements.
Can I use my current CPAP mask with a travel CPAP machine?
It depends on the machine you choose.
The Yuwell BreathCare Pocket S and Transcend Micro are compatible with virtually all standard CPAP masks using standard tubing.
The ResMed AirMini is designed to work with specific compatible masks and setup packs. However, it can also be used with most standard CPAP masks when paired with a compatible adapter, such as the ZephAir™ AirMini Universal Adapter.
If you're unsure which travel CPAP machine is compatible with your current mask, our team is happy to help.
Do travel CPAP machines have humidification?
Many travel CPAP machines offer humidification, although it differs from traditional home CPAP machines.
The ResMed AirMini uses ResMed's waterless HumidX™ system, while the Transcend Micro uses an HME (Heat Moisture Exchanger) for waterless humidification. The Yuwell BreathCare Pocket S does not include its own integrated humidification system, but it is compatible with many third-party HME (Heat Moisture Exchanger) devices available on the market,
allowing users to add waterless humidification if desired.
The type of humidification that's best for you depends on your comfort preferences, therapy needs, and travel style.
Are travel CPAP machines louder than standard CPAP machines?
Yes. Because travel CPAP machines are much smaller than standard home CPAP machines, they generally produce slightly more operating noise. This is normal and is a result of their compact design. Despite this, travel CPAP machines are designed to operate quietly while providing effective sleep apnea therapy.
Can I use a travel CPAP machine every night?
Yes. Travel CPAP machines are designed to deliver effective CPAP therapy and can be used nightly if needed. However, they are primarily intended for travel and temporary use away from home.
For most users, a standard home CPAP machine is recommended for everyday therapy, as it typically offers enhanced comfort features such as a larger heated humidifier, quieter operation, and a full-size design. A travel CPAP machine is an excellent companion for vacations, business trips, and camping, allowing you to maintain your sleep apnea therapy wherever you go.
Which travel CPAP machine is right for me?
Choosing the right travel CPAP machine depends on your
travel style, mask preference, and therapy needs.
