How to Clean Your CPAP Equipment: A Complete Guide

Using your CPAP machine each night is essential for managing sleep apnea—but keeping it clean is just as important. Without regular maintenance, your equipment can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and allergens that may lead to health issues like sinus infections or even pneumonia.

Now, the good news: A simple cleaning routine is all it takes to keep your CPAP system in top condition. Below, we outline how to clean each component properly, helping you breathe easier and sleep better.

CPAP Mask: Daily and Weekly Maintenance

Your CPAP mask is in constant contact with your skin and breath, so it's important to clean it regularly to remove oils, sweat, and bacteria.

Daily:

  • Disassemble the mask into three parts: cushion, headgear, and frame.

  • Gently clean the cushion using mild liquid soap and warm water.

  • Rinse thoroughly and place on a towel to air dry.

  • CPAP mask wipes can also be used for convenient daily cushion cleaning. We carry a variety of 100% Pure Cotton Wipes with no harmful chemicals to keep your CPAP mask fresh.

Weekly:

  • Wash the headgear and frame in warm, soapy water.

  • Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.

  • Avoid exposing any part of the mask to direct sunlight.

  • If you are using the wipes we recommended daily, be sure to wash the cushion at least once a week.

Water Chamber: Daily Rinse and Weekly Clean

The warm, humid environment in your water chamber makes it prone to bacterial growth if not cleaned regularly.

Daily:

  • Empty any remaining water in the morning.

  • Lightly rinse and leave to air dry.

Weekly:

  • Disassemble the chamber and soak it in warm water with mild soap.

  • Use a soft brush or cloth to clean all corners.

  • Rinse thoroughly and place on a towel to air dry.

  • Avoid direct sunlight.

If you use a ResMed cleanable water chamber, it can be placed on the top rack of the dishwasher. Tap water is okay for cleaning, but we advise you to always fill the water chamber with distilled water to avoid mineral buildup.

CPAP Hose: Weekly Cleaning and Optional Deep Clean

Hoses can accumulate moisture, which may lead to mold or bacteria if left unchecked.

Weekly:

  • Fill a sink or basin with warm water and mild soap.

  • Submerge the hose and let it soak.

  • Swish water through to clean the inside, then rinse thoroughly.

  • Hang the hose over a shower rod to air dry completely.

If you notice odor, discolouration, or build-up in your CPAP hose, consider using a CPAP hose brush like Purdoux’s 2-in-1 CPAP Hose Brush or CPAPology’s Monty Elite Tube Brush - both suitable for standard-sized tubing systems. If you use a slimline hose, we have a CPAPology brush for you too. Insert the brush from one end, gently working it through to dislodge buildup. Wetting the bristles or adding a drop of soap may help if the brush is difficult to push through.

Filters: Replace or Clean Regularly

Filters help trap airborne particles and prevent them from reaching your lungs. It's important to know what type of filter your machine uses. If you’re not sure, or would appreciate some guidance, please feel free to Contact Us for support.

Here are some of the most common machine brands and recommendations for their filter systems:

ResMed Machines:

  • Use disposable filters only.

  • Replace once a month.

  • Do not wash.

Philips Respironics Machines:

  • Disposable filter: Replace monthly.

  • Reusable filter: Rinse under running water one to two times per week and replace every six months.

CPAP Device: Keep the Exterior Dust-Free

The CPAP machine itself doesn’t need frequent deep cleaning, but occasional dusting helps keep it in good shape.

As Needed:

  • Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe down the exterior.

  • If necessary, use a slightly damp cloth—ensure it is only mildly damp and avoid getting moisture near any openings or the power supply.
